Five bedrooms set in deep gardens at the very edge of the headland, on the largest plot and closest to the sea of any house here. Two levels joined by an internal lift, which makes it the easiest of the villas for anyone who does not want stairs. It faces southeast, so the view runs across Nakalay Bay to the Patong coastline. Inside, vivid contemporary paintings by local artists, oriental rugs and restrained Thai detail; upstairs, double height cathedral ceilings and floor to ceiling windows over expansive living areas, with a full Western kitchen and a generous dining room. Outside, a twelve metre infinity pool, a built in barbecue and terrace space for the whole party to eat in the open. All five bedrooms have their own terrace; the master’s wraps around, with an outdoor whirlpool tub and a view you can take from the tub or the bed. A stairway drops from there into a sloping garden under palms. A live-in chef and housekeeper are resident, with a full time English speaking concierge on site.

Being closest to the sea is the selling point and the maintenance bill. Salt reaches this house first and hardest, and an internal lift is a mechanical system that has to be serviced rather than trusted. Shibumi keeps Rom Trai to the standard that brings guests back a third time: disciplined upkeep, a consistent team, and quiet, personal service.
